What is Dimensional Weight?

Dimensional weight (DIM weight) is a pricing method carriers use to charge for large but lightweight packages. Instead of billing by actual weight alone, carriers calculate a "dimensional weight" based on the package's volume and charge whichever is higher.

Amazon uses dimensional weight for FBA shipping and inbound shipments. If your products are bulky relative to their weight, you could be paying significantly more than the actual weight suggests. The standard domestic divisor of 139 is used by UPS and FedEx; international shipments use 5,000 (in cm/kg).

How to Calculate Dimensional Weight

The formula is straightforward:

Dim Weight = ⌈(Length × Width × Height) ÷ DIM Divisor⌉

Billable Weight = MAX(Actual Weight, Dim Weight)

Worked example (domestic): A box measuring 20" × 14" × 10" with an actual weight of 8 lbs:

  • Volume: 20 × 14 × 10 = 2,800 cubic inches
  • Dim Weight: ⌈2,800 ÷ 139⌉ = ⌈20.14⌉ = 21 lbs
  • Billable Weight: MAX(8, 21) = 21 lbs (dim weight applies)

Understanding Your Results

If dimensional weight exceeds actual weight, you're paying for space rather than mass. This is common with products like pillows, pet beds, or large electronics packaging. To reduce costs:

  • Reduce packaging size — Use the smallest box that safely fits your product
  • Consider poly bags — Where appropriate, they eliminate wasted box space
  • Ship to a single FC — Consolidating can reduce per-unit dim weight costs on inbound

Frequently Asked Questions

Dimensional weight is a calculation that estimates the weight of a package based on its volume (length × width × height) divided by a standard divisor. Carriers charge the greater of actual weight or dimensional weight, so bulky but lightweight packages may cost more to ship than their actual weight suggests.

Amazon uses dimensional weight because shipping carriers like UPS and FedEx charge based on the space a package occupies in their trucks and planes, not just its mass. Large, lightweight items take up valuable cargo space, so dim weight ensures pricing reflects the true cost of transportation.

The most effective ways to reduce dim weight are: use smaller packaging that fits your product snugly, switch from boxes to poly bags where possible, reduce excess packaging materials, and consider product design changes that allow more compact packaging.

The domestic divisor (139) is used for shipments within the US and is based on inches and pounds. The international divisor (5,000) is used for cross-border shipments and is based on centimeters and kilograms. Both arrive at similar dimensional weight results when converting between measurement systems.

Yes. Amazon FBA fulfillment fees are based on the shipping weight of your product, which is the greater of actual weight or dimensional weight. If your product has a high dim weight, you will pay higher FBA fulfillment fees per unit, directly impacting your margins.
